This mountain wedding was a whirlwind and very much a typical June wedding in Colorado. What started out as a decent mellow day in the mountains quickly turned into a really crazy hail storm. It was so crazy we even rescued some cyclists that were getting pelted and brought them down the mountain to safety. Not only was the hail between marble and gumball size, there was so much hail that it filled the road about 4 to 5 inches high. It felt really weird to drive on as you're rolling around on the hail and there is a bunch of water in it as well moving across the road. Kinda scary and surreal. I can't imagine what they would have been like on a bicycle. But the best part... it made for some pretty awesome and moody photographs as well as a great wedding story for Lauren and Joe.
L & J opted to get married and share their vows in this meadow I found with Aspen trees. It was a really great and emotional ceremony. I could really feel the love radiate between the two of them and with thier daughter starting with thier first look as a family. The rain held off just long enough for their ceremony to conclude and then it was time to race to the cars and make our way up the mountain pass. I had several awesome spots planned to take them but with the weather being so erradic we opted to get up there as fast as we could for some shots.
Near the top, you could see several storm systems moving around us and somehow we still had this pocket of sunlight. You can even see some crazy waterspouts in the portraits of Lauren. We had short waves of rain that we were able to navigate through but then you could hear it coming; massive amounts of hail were inbound. Thankfully, we were near a structure so we were able to be safe. I captured some really sweet moments of L & J with their daughter. The really have a great mood in black and white. A little while later the cyclists came running into the structure for cover as well. We tried waiting for it to pass but it never did. Eventually it lighten up enough to be able to drive down safely.
Just as we got to mid mountain and trying to drive in the slurry of hail and water, the sun comes out just as it began to set so we stopped and took a few more and had a bunch of fun with it. I love me some sunsets.
All in all, it was a pretty beautiful and exciting day. All the things you would hope for on your wedding day. One of my favorite things about weddings is while they never quite go as planned, they are so filled with love and still a pretty incredible day.
If you are considering a Mount Blue Sky Wedding I would love to be your photographer and take you to all my favorite hidden and not-so-hidden spots.
Side note: you may be wondering what is Mount Blue Sky...it received it new name in 2023 after being changed from Mount Evans.
I am available for all of Colorado and destination weddings, elopements, and engagements. I love to wander.
